Credit Cards are Great to Use in Moderation

Credit cards are the backbone of our current society. They allow us to buy things that we need just for showing a small piece of plastic with numbers on it. We may have the money to buy it, but we leave it in our pocket and use the card. Almost everyone uses credit to buy things from a home to an expensive dinner. We have grown accustomed to not paying for things until the statement comes in.

Credit card companies solicit college students and other people who do not have credit. They make it fun and hip to have a credit card. All of their ads show people getting things quickly and easily by just having a certain card with them. They seem very happy and they never have to take any money out of their pockets. The people in the ad can go all day long buying the things they want without taking any money out at all. Each time they charge it they are smiling.

When the statements for your credit cards arrive, it can be very shocking. The thing about paying for purchase with a tiny plastic card is that you don?t really think about how much you are spending. It is easy to get caught up in thinking that you are just buying this outfit or that pair of shoes. The problem is that these things add up to one big purchase. Purchasing on credit can be great thing in moderation. You should not spend any more than you expect to pay off at the end of the month. If you cannot pay off the credit cards, then the balance will carryover and join the purchases you make for that month. If you do not pay off the entire balance, it is subject to an interest rate. The interest rate is the amount you pay in order to keep a balance on the card.

The interest rate may not be very high, but you have to make sure you consider that you are adding to the cost of the item you purchased. If someone borrowed money from you who was not family, you would charge them a fee for having the use of your money. That is what an interest rate is to credit card companies. If you keep this in mind, it may help you judge your purchases and use self control.

If you are not able to make your payment on your credit card, you can run into problems. If your credit card balance is close to your assigned credit line and you miss a payment, you could be charged a late payment and over the credit line fee. These fees can cause your next payment to go from $20 a month to $100. You may have thought the payment would double on the credit card because you didn?t pay the month before, but you must always consider the fees.

If you miss a payment, the company has the right to change your interest rate to a higher one which will cause your payments to increase. The credit card company can also increase the interest rate if you have been late on other credit cards. You become a larger risk to them because you are missing payments. Because of that risk, they will charge you more for the convenience of having a loan through them.

The credit card company reports to the credit bureau each month through a process they call ?tapes.? These ?tapes? are sent to the company automatically each month reporting on your loans. It will list your last payment and the payment date. It will also list your current balance and if your payment was late. If your payment is late and it shows on your credit bureau report, it can affect your credit score adversely. There are some companies who will not give you credit as a result of missing payments on your credit cards.

Use your credit wisely. It is easy to go out and buy a lot of items when your first get your card. It is almost fun to run the card through the little machine and walk away with merchandise only signing your name and leaving. When you sign your name you are stating that you will pay that off within the next statement. If you cannot pay it off, you may consider waiting to make the purchase. There are still a few stores that offer layaway on purchases. Using this service will allow you to budget out the purchase over time. Owners of credit cards have to be careful to make sure they understand what each purchase will mean to them. That includes the latte that was only $5 but you put on the card anyway. It is not to be frivolous because that type of spending can come back to haunt you.
