The Convenience of Having Credit CardsOne important thing to look at when you?re deciding on credit cards is the annual fee. Some cards have an annual fee, and some do not. If you look at the terms and conditions of the card, it will list the annual fee under the fees section, along with the charge for late and over limit fees. You can probably find the interest rate or A.P.R. (annual percentage rate) in that same section as well. The lower the interest rate is the better. The same goes with the fees, and you may be able to find a card that doesn?t have an annual fee at all. Having credit cards can be very convenient. It allows you to do many things that you may not be able to if you were only carrying cash or using a checkbook. A lot of stores nowadays don?t take personal checks, but the majority of them will accept a credit card endorsed by a major brand, such as Visa or MasterCard. You don?t have to worry about having fumbling through a purse or wallet to find the right amount of cash, or taking the time to write out a check. All you have to do is swipe, sign, and go. Another perk of having credit cards is that it will allow you to purchase things online. This gives you access to stores and items that you may not be able to get otherwise. It also allows you to take care of any unexpected expenses that may arise before you get paid or when you?re running low on cash, and pay them back the next time you get paid. Instead of having to pay the entire balance in full at one time, you can often pay them back in smaller increments. Your credit card statement will show the minimum payment amount they will accept. It?s also possible to use your credit cards to consolidate some of your debts. If you have some outstanding balances on other loans or debts, you can put them on the credit card. Then, you have just the monthly payment to make on the credit card, instead of having to make several payments to multiple companies or individuals. Again, since you don?t have to pay the entire balance in full, this may give you a bit of a break. Pay as much as you can, as long as you?re meeting the amount due for the minimum payment. If something happens and your credit card is lost or stolen, don?t panic! All you have to do is call the credit card company (the number can be found on a statement, or on the company?s website) and let them know what has happened. They can put a block on the card so that it cannot be used, and list the most recent charges out to you to make sure that they?re all yours. Since it?s not tied directly to a checking account, you don?t have to worry about those funds being frozen. If there are any charges on your credit cards that you do not recognize, or know aren?t yours, you can dispute them. When that happens, the credit card company will investigate the charges. If they find that the charges were fraudulent, they can reverse them so that you?re not held responsible. Any card that?s lost or stolen can be shut down, and a new card mailed out to you. Once you receive the new card, you call to confirm that the new card has been received. When the card has been activated, you?re able to begin using that account again. If you?re interested in applying for credit cards, there are many ways to do so. You can apply for one by phone, by filling out a form and mailing it in, or by going online. Online applications are one of the most popular, and you can often receive the decision within just a few minutes. To apply you can do a search for credit cards, then read about the different types available and find one that best suits your needs. Once you?ve done so, you fill out a form online and submit the information. The company will get back to you with the decision as quickly as possible, and you may have a new credit card before you know it! You may think that you?re unable to get credit cards because of a less than perfect credit history, but this isn?t necessarily true. There are many different types of credit cards, including one type called a secured card. You have to pay more to obtain one, but it is the perfect way to begin rebuilding your credit. Make your payments on time and keep the balance under the credit limit, and you can usually upgrade to an unsecured card after establishing a good credit history. |
